Community Involvement

Alex has been a volunteer with the “Big Brothers Big Sisters” organization since 2010.  Having the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering him to achieve, has been a rewarding way for Alex to give back to his community.  Meeting two to three times a month, Alex has made a close connection with his little brother, and is helping him to reach his goal of being the first in his family to attend college.

Cure Duchenne is a non-profit organization dedicated to curing Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an inherited genetic condition which results in muscle degeneration.  Alex has been working to build awareness of DMD in the young professional community, and create an increased charitable-giving attitude within this group.  As a member the Cure Duchenne Board, Alex is also helping to raise money by organizing events in the local area.  He is hopeful that a cure will be found to help save this generation of boys.

49ERS HOLD 15TH-ANNUAL DONOR STUDENT-ATHLETE DINNER:  More than 215 in attendance

Sept. 22, 2011

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 15th-annual Long Beach State Donor Student-Athlete Dinner was held Wednesday night at The Pointe inside the Walter Pyramid with more than 215 student-athletes, donors and administrators in attendance.

Alex Goldberg, a member of the Class of 2010 and a former Long Beach State track and field athlete, was the featured speaker. A part of the 4x100 school-record relay team and the 2007 Big West Freshman of the Year, Goldberg spoke about the influence that his time at LBSU had on his personal and professional development and how it allowed him to become a leader in the community while working as a financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual.

Both student-athletes and donors came away impressed. "This is the best event that the athletic department hosts each year," Director's Circle member Rick Burns said. "The interaction with the student-athletes allows me to truly see how my financial support impacts young people at this university."
